Events

I just planned and survived my first major event!  Whew.  Who would have thought it could be so much work.  It would have probably gone much faster if my brain didn't seem to be floating so much.  Ya know when you think so much that everything is fuzzy?  That was me.  Anyway, I was called as a Cub Master a couple of months ago and the big Blue & Gold Banquet/Birthday Party of Scouts happens in February.  Two months ago I started out with no clue about cub scouts (literally).  I have a little clue now and have actually been impressed with how much more quickly I've learned people names and some of my requirements then I expected myself to do.  The banquet actually came together very nicely in spite of my hardness of thinking.  It is definitely a testament of help from a higher power...especially when things happen to fall together after praying.  Go figure.

Our theme was "Tangled".  No, not the movie.  We had fettuccine Alfredo for dinner and tied all of the silverware together with string.  I was running around trying to pull other things together and never actually stopped to take a look at how it was for people to eat with everything tied together but it sounds like most of them actually took their silverware out of the mess instead of playing tug of war while eating.  Oh, well.  It could have been fun but it still fit the them. During dinner I was actually running around trying to collect papers from the cub scouts to put some ad libs together about the leaders.  That could have also been funnier if I had given the paragraphs to the boys earlier so they could at least read through them once, but it still worked out alright.  We also played that game where everyone stands in a circle and grabs a hand and they have to work together to untangle their arms without letting go.  Last of all, we had a dessert contest.  Some of the desserts were very creative.  We had one boy put together something that looked like dirt and he had gummy worms "tangled" in the dirt.  It looked cute.  I think the dirt was oreo cookies.  We also had a boy bake a cake in a bowl and cover it with squirmy frosting that looked like spaghetti.  He also made no bake cookies in the shape of meat balls. When he brought it in I really had to look close to see if it was real.  His dessert was actually the winner.  He had to put a giant cupcake on his head and do a dance...only after I demonstrated.  The parents made me put it back on my head so they could get a picture.  It would be really embarrassing if I let myself think about it...so I just don't.

It seems like most people enjoyed themselves and didn't get too board.  I had some mazes and stuff to braid and untangle during some of the down time before dinner.  These activities would earn them extra money to put toward the dessert they would like to vote for. They had to stick their hands into spaghetti noodles to pull out pennies and nickles and put their coins in cups next to their favorite dessert.

I didn't do a ton on decorations.  I made a bunch of labels to help things be a little more organized but I think the things that made the difference were the blue table cloths that were donated and the center pieces the boys made.  They were big rocks covered in yellow mesh and tied with shiny blue star wire. We also had a banner up front and some random music playing in the back ground.

We also had thank you cards for the boys and parents to sign for the leaders and we thanked them individually and gave them some "Twisted" Red Vines.  I was able to say a few personal things about a few leaders but not knowing a ton about most of them it was sort of impersonal.  Hopefully they felt appreciated enough but who knows with that kind of thing.

Anyhoo, overall, the banquet seemed to turn out well enough.  I had a ton of help from parents and leaders which really made the difference. I meant to stop and take some pictures but totally forgot.  Sad day.  Oh, well.  Who would have realized how much goes into planning these things?  I am now more appreciative of those in charge. I can't believe how many weddings my parents had to plan! 6! I hope I don't actually have to experience every single hard thing in life to appreciate it.  I can't say I'm off to a good start though.

Though I enjoyed preparing for the "Tangled" Blue & Gold Banquet I'm glad it's over!  I'm sure Jaret is too ;)
