Who in their right mind wakes up at quarter to five in the morning. Wakes their baby up to feed her. Then heads off to hike a mountain in the pitch dark with the stars shining brightly? Yeah, that would be me and Emily. Though, I'm not in my right mind but Emily is...and we did it. We hiked, that is, but we didn't make it to the M. Emily brought the body guard, her dog, and we got part of the way up when her trusty friend started to bark. "That's not the squirrel bark", commented Emily. So, we froze in our tracks and I don't know about Emily but I had lots of scenarios running through my head of us running from mountain lions, bobcats, and bears. It could have been a deer but we couldn't see anything in the pitch black. So, we decided to turn around. Hiking down in the dark is a lot more challenging than hiking up. Miraculously we made it back down and started up the easy trail. Not too long later we had to turn around and head home in order for us all to make it back before our lives woke up.
I think I've hiked the M and NOT made it more times than I've hiked and made it in the last two years. While I was in college, if someone would have predicted that I would ever have once not made it to the M I would have laughed at them. Now I just laugh because I don't care and have nothing to prove. Where did that competitive spirit go?
