Have I complained about officiating lately?
For any and all interested, believe it or not, officiating basketball is not easy (unless you are not the official). In fact, my past experience as an athlete, a coach, and a fan have lead me to believe that officiating is actually the hardest of the bunch. Officials look at the game in real time. They have to look for about 20 different things all at once: 3 seconds, tripping, pushing, illegal screens, who the ball went out on in a scuffle, getting a good angle so you can actually see what's going on, over the back, foot on the line, over and back, travel, double dribble, charge, who fouled, what their number is, how to report it, who the shooter is, where to take the ball out, how many shots, when to start and stop the clock, time out, tip, jumping over fans on the sideline, delay of game violation....it goes on and on. On top of that, anyone who watched me report some of the violations would probably laugh. Half the time I can't think of the symbols fast enough to communicate what just happened and I usually mix the order up. Needless to say, it is definitely not a job I would recommend to a people pleaser. As I was listening to insults from the crowd today I thought, "being a referee is like being a cop". People only buddy up to you when they want something from you. Otherwise, they despise you and think of all the incidents where they believe that you and every other official single handedly ruined their lives. Most people don't even buddy up, they just yell at and insult you thinking they are giving you an incentive to give them a call in their favor. I just call what I see. I don't know what I'm complaining about though. I get paid for exercising!
